We have seen double the level of cuts to our local police force as the rest of the country, with 500 fewer officers in Humberside today than in 2010. During the same period we’ve seen a 59% rise in violent crime. People shouldn’t worry for their safety in their own neighbourhoods but increasingly I hear residents say they are losing faith in the ability of the police to protect them.
There are so many people across Great Grimsby who are doing their best to improve the town and opportunities here. Increasing levels of criminal activity undermines those efforts and gives a negative impression about the town being somewhere safe and pleasant for people to live, work and do business.
I know that our police force are working as hard as they can. The officers I’ve walked the beat with care passionately about keeping Great Grimsby safe. They and the people of Great Grimsby don’t deserve the unfair and disproportionate funding cuts the Conservative Government has hit us with.
Since I was elected two years ago:
- I have brought the police into communities that feel ignored and written off as ‘no-go areas’, and held public meetings with residents so police understand better the problems facing residents.
- I have spoken out in Parliament numerous times against the Government’s cuts to police officer numbers.
- My colleagues and I successfully forced the Government to reverse plans to go even further in cutting funding to Humberside Police in 2015.
If I am re-elected on 8 June, I will continue to do everything I can to keep Great Grimsby’s streets safe.
