Melanie lost no time in making her mark on the House of Commons with her maiden speech on June 1st. Beginning with a tribute to her predecessor, Austin Mitchell, she referred to his passion for Grimsby and its people and his hard work in areas such as housing and compensation for fishermen. She urged members to watch the film, ‘Great Grimsby’ *, which Austin made just before his retirement as a tribute to the area he had served for 38 years.
She then went on to draw members’ attention to the importance of the renewable energy sector for our town, insisting that political support for the industry is essential for its economic growth following a decline in food manufacturing and petrochemicals . She emphasised the creation of quality jobs and training, and finished with a reminder that her winning campaign slogan had been ‘Pride, passion and belief in Grimsby.’
